Vendo Company
The Vendo Company is a large retailer of cold beverage vending machines.
Founded in 1937 in Kansas City, Missouri and now based in Dallas, Texas, Vendo
is one of the largest manufacturers of vending machines in the world.
Before there were coin-operated vending machines, soda bottles were distributed
from coolers packed with ice, and payment was based on the honor system.
Capitalizing on the lack of effective payment collection, brothers Elmer F. and
John T Pierson of Kansas City developed a coin-operated locking lid to be placed
on common ice chests. This, in effect, created the first vending machine. The
brothers continued to develop this technology after establishing The Vendo
Company in 1937. The Vendo Company built and maintained Coca-Cola machines
throughout the Midwest until 1956 when it merged with Vendorlater, a former
Pepsi-Cola bottling company, and moved to California.
Dixie-Narco Company
Dixie-Narco is a major manufacturer of soda vending machines located in
Williston, South Carolina. Their main competitors are Royal Vendors and Vendo.
Formerly a subsidiary of Maytag, it is now a subsidiary of Crane Co.
One especially notable product from Dixie-Narco is their Beveragemax glass front
vending machine. These machines allow a large variety of different products to
be shown to the buyer before the beverage is purchased.
Automatic Products International, Ltd
Automatic Products International, Ltd., known simply as APi, is a leading
U.S. vending company based in St. Paul, Minnesota. Founded in 1949, they
specialize in glass front snack machines.
In 2006, the company was acquired by rival Crane Co., manufacturer of the
National Vendors line of vending machines.
Royal Vendors Company
Royal Vendors, Inc., is a manufacturer of cold-drink vending machines located in Kearneysville, West Virginia. It was founded in 1988 by Roy Steeley, a former manager at Dixie-Narco, another manufacturer of cold-drink machines. In the mid-1990's, Steeley sold Royal Vendors to Coin Acceptors, Inc. ("Coinco"), of St. Louis, Missouri. In 1997, Steeley went on to co-found a new company, Automated Merchandising Systems ("AMS"), also located in Kearneysville.
Flavia
Flavia is a consumer hot beverage system from Mars, Incorporated, that
prepares one-cup servings of coffee, tea, and hot chocolate drinks. Flavia
launched its first brewer in 1984 and was also the first company to introduce
Brew-by-Pack to the home and office. It is the only single cup system to offer
cappuccino, mochaccino and chai latte beverages.
The Flavia technology brews drinks directly from a single serve "filterpack"
which means that the pack is the actual brewing chamber so that each drink is
not tainted by the previous brew. The filterpacks are foil-sealed thus
protecting them from oxygen and moisture. Users insert a packet directly into
the machine and the drink brews right into the cup which means minimal upkeep
and no cleaning between drinks.
The Flavia system has been available in the workplace for nearly a decade and
there are two different Flavia machines available. The Flavia SB100 is geared
towards smaller offices (25 people or less) and the Flavia S350 is for larger
(25 people +) offices. The Flavia Fusion drinks station was developed for
in-home use and has been available for use since September 2005. It comes in
three colors: black, ice blue and red.
Currently there are over 30 different drink choices available which include
gourmet coffees, fresh leaf teas, cappuccinos, mochaccinos, Milky Way branded
swirl lattes and chai lattes.
